Many alchemical treatises state that whoever knows the fire knows the Work. This is no exaggeration: in the laboratory almost everything depends on heat, its intensity, its duration, the way it is transmitted to matter. But the texts also speak of a different fire, one that is not lit with wood, and which they call the «secret fire». An essential part of the tradition is played out between these two fires.
The regimen of fire
Alchemists used the expression «regimen of fire» to describe the way heat was governed during the different stages of the Work. The wrong fire could ruin months of work: too strong, it burned the matter or made the vessel burst; too weak, it left the process half-done.
That is why many authors describe a progression in degrees, from the gentlest heat to the most intense.
| Degree | Traditional comparison | Use |
|---|---|---|
| First | the warmth of a brooding hen | putrefaction, slow digestion |
| Second | the heat of the summer sun | first separations |
| Third | the heat of glowing sand | fixation |
| Fourth | strong, open fire | melting, calcination |
The comparisons vary from one author to another, but the principle is constant: you begin with a very gentle heat and increase it only when the matter is ready.
The baths: indirect heat
To obtain a steady, moderate heat, alchemists did not place the vessel directly on the fire but immersed it in an intermediate medium.
- Water bath: the vessel stood in a container of hot water. It is our bain-marie, which tradition links to the name of Maria the Jewess, one of the earliest figures of Greco-Egyptian alchemy.
- Ash bath: ash transmitted a stronger but still even heat.
- Sand bath: sand allowed higher temperatures while keeping stability.
- Dung: the slow heat of fermentation was used for very long digestions.
The common principle is mediation: fire does not touch matter directly but reaches it through an element that makes it measured.
The secret fire
Alongside the fire of the furnace, the texts speak of a fire they call «ours», «secret», «philosophical». The authors insist that it is not common fire. Some distinguish several fires: a natural fire, present in the matter itself; an external fire, that of the furnace; and a fire «against nature», which dissolves bodies differently from any flame.
What this fire was is one of the great questions of alchemy. Some interpretations identify it with a solvent, able to «burn» without flame; others with the inner heat of matter, awakened by the art; still others with a spiritual principle. The texts deliberately leave the question open.
The fire that does not burn
A recurring formula describes the secret fire as a fire that does not burn the hands, or as a water that burns. These paradoxes point to a force that transforms without destroying. It is the kind of heat every deep transformation needs: intense enough to change matter, gentle enough not to annihilate it.
An inner reading of fire
On the level of inner work the regimen of fire offers very concrete guidance.
- Begin gently: a new path of study or practice should start with sustainable commitments, not heroic efforts destined to burn out.
- Increase by degrees: intensity grows when the foundation is stable.
- Use mediators: just as the bath separates fire from the vessel, habits, rhythms and structures protect an inner process from reactions that are too abrupt.
- Recognise the inner fire: each person has their own heat, a desire or passion which, when governed, feeds transformation.
Festina lente
An ancient Latin motto, festina lente, «make haste slowly», sums up the spirit of the regimen of fire well. It does not mean laziness but an active, patient constancy. Renaissance emblems rendered it with images combining a symbol of speed and one of stability, such as the dolphin wrapped around an anchor.
The errors of fire
The texts often list the most common mistakes, which lend themselves to a symbolic reading.
- Haste: raising the fire too soon, hoping to speed things up.
- Discontinuity: letting the fire go out and relighting it, interrupting the process.
- Inattention: not watching over the vessel at critical moments.
- Excess of zeal: adding heat when the matter needs rest.
In the path offered by Studio Esoterico Cornelio the regimen of fire is often recalled as a criterion of measure: not how much one does, but with what heat and what constancy.
In short
- The regimen of fire was the governing of heat through the different stages of the Work.
- The texts describe four degrees, from the warmth of a brooding hen to open fire.
- Water, ash and sand baths ensured indirect, steady heat.
- The secret fire is a fire that transforms without destroying, and it teaches inner measure.
