The seven metals and the planets: alchemical correspondences

Lead, tin, iron, copper, quicksilver, silver and gold: why alchemy linked each metal to a planet and how the ladder of metals becomes an inner path.

For the alchemist the mineral world was not mute. Every metal had a character, a temperament, a history, and above all a link with one of the seven bodies visible to the naked eye that tradition called planets. This network of correspondences is one of the most useful tools for reading alchemical texts, where the name of a planet often stands in for the metal and vice versa.

The table of correspondences

Western tradition fixes seven pairs, which remained essentially stable for centuries.

Planet Metal Symbolic quality
Saturn lead weight, slowness, limit, time
Jupiter tin expansion, order, generosity
Mars iron strength, cutting, decision
Sun gold centre, perfection, consciousness
Venus copper harmony, attraction, beauty
Mercury quicksilver mobility, mediation, transformation
Moon silver reflection, receptivity, rhythm

The metal we call mercury takes its name from the planet itself: liquid, elusive, able to combine with other metals, it seemed to embody the character of the messenger of the gods. The ancients called it quicksilver, living silver.

Why seven

The number depends on what could be observed. Five planets are visible to the naked eye, plus the Sun and Moon, which tradition counted among the wandering stars. Likewise, the metals known and worked since antiquity were seven. The coincidence was read as a sign of the deep order of the cosmos: what moves in the sky has its reflection in the bowels of the earth.

The idea that metals «grow» underground under the influence of the planets was widespread. Mines were seen as wombs in which matter slowly ripened, like fruit.

The ladder of metals

Many authors considered metals as degrees of one and the same substance at different stages of ripening. Lead, heavy and dark, was the furthest from perfection; gold, unalterable and shining, was its fulfilment. The other metals stood along the way.

Transmutation, from this perspective, was not a magic that turns one thing into something entirely different, but the acceleration of a natural process: bringing the «unripe» metal to maturity. The philosophers' stone was imagined as the catalyst of this ripening.

Lead and the work of Saturn

Lead deserves special attention. Saturn is the slowest of the visible planets, associated with time, old age and melancholy. But for alchemy it is also the starting point: the prime matter of the Work is often associated with Saturn. Without lead there is no gold; without weight and limit there is no transformation.

Gold and the Sun

At the other end, gold does not oxidise, does not corrupt, withstands fire. The Sun, centre of the traditional planetary system, is its celestial counterpart. Alchemical gold, distinct from common gold, represents the fulfilment of nature and, on the inner plane, a stable and luminous consciousness.

An inner reading of the metals

The ladder of metals lends itself to a symbolic reading of the personal path. Each metal indicates a quality that can be raw or refined.

  • Lead: heaviness can become depth and patience.
  • Tin: expansion can become ordered generosity instead of dispersion.
  • Iron: aggression can become the ability to decide and to protect.
  • Copper: the wish to please can become a sense of beauty and harmony.
  • Quicksilver: restlessness can become mobile intelligence and the ability to mediate.
  • Silver: suggestibility can become sensitivity and listening.
  • Gold: pride can become centredness and radiance.

The work does not consist in eliminating one metal to reach gold, but in bringing each to its noblest form.

How to use the correspondences

Planetary correspondences help to decipher the texts: when a treatise speaks of «Saturn in the vessel» or of «marrying Venus to Mars», it is describing operations on metals in coded language. But they also serve as a scheme for reflection. A simple exercise is to choose a metal each day of the week, following the ancient association of days with planets, and to observe during the day how the corresponding quality shows itself in you.

At Studio Esoterico Cornelio this ladder is offered as a working map, not a rigid classification: each person recognises in themselves metals that are more present and metals that are more hidden.

In short

  • Alchemy associates seven metals with the seven visible bodies of tradition.
  • Lead and Saturn stand at the start of the ladder, gold and the Sun at its fulfilment.
  • Transmutation was conceived as the accelerated ripening of a natural process.
  • Inwardly each metal indicates a quality to be refined, not eliminated.
