The stages of the alchemical Work: nigredo to rubedo

The four stages of the alchemical Work explained one by one: colours, symbols, animals and the inner meaning of nigredo, albedo, citrinitas and rubedo.

Anyone who opens an alchemical treatise faces a succession of colours: black, white, yellow, red. They are not decoration. For the old practitioners, changes of colour in the vessel showed how far the work had progressed, and over time those colours became the very names of the stages of the Great Work. Knowing them is the simplest way to find your bearings in texts that otherwise look like labyrinths.

A sequence of colours

The idea of a chromatic progression of matter already appears in the alchemical writings of the Greco-Egyptian period. In the Latin tradition the sequence settles into four terms:

Stage Colour Frequent images Inner sense
Nigredo black raven, death's head, black sun dissolution, crisis
Albedo white swan, dove, moon, queen purification, clarity
Citrinitas yellow dawn, rising sun awakening of awareness
Rubedo red phoenix, crowned king, red lion integration, completion

It should be said at once that many authors, especially from the late Middle Ages onwards, reduce the stages to three, absorbing citrinitas into the passage from white to red. So there is no single, official scheme: there are families of texts that use different schemes.

Nigredo: the work in black

The first stage is the most feared and the most necessary. The starting matter, sealed in the vessel and patiently heated, decomposes and turns black. The texts speak of putrefaction, of death, of the «raven's head». The image of the corpse, the buried king or the darkened sun recurs in a great many illustrations.

Symbolically, nigredo represents the moment when old forms dissolve. No authentic transformation begins without something being let go. That is why alchemists considered it a good sign: if the black does not appear, the Work has not really begun.

How to recognise it in inner life

  • The usual certainties stop working.
  • You feel suspended, without reference points.
  • Aspects of yourself that had been ignored come to the surface.

Albedo: the work in white

After the black comes the washing. The texts describe repeated ablutions, the matter turning white, the appearance of a surface shining like silver. It is the stage of the Moon and the Queen, of the descending dove, of the swan.

Albedo is not yet the goal, but it is a first stable achievement. Many authors associate it with the «white stone», able to bring base metals to the state of silver. Inwardly it indicates a regained clarity: what was confused separates out, thought becomes limpid, and you calmly see what used to frighten you.

Citrinitas: the yellowing

The third stage, when present, marks the passage from lunar to solar light. The white takes on a yellow tinge like the sky at dawn. It is a moment of awakening: the clarity of albedo, which was reflected like the light of the Moon, becomes a light of its own.

Even where citrinitas is not named, the texts often describe intermediate colours between white and red, and between black and white there sometimes appears the so-called peacock's tail, a burst of iridescent colours.

Rubedo: the work in red

The last stage brings matter to red. It is the time of the crowned King, of the red lion, of the phoenix reborn from its ashes. Here the definitive union of opposites takes place, often represented as a wedding between King and Queen, between Sun and Moon.

From the red the philosophers' stone is born in its completed form. On the inner plane rubedo is integration: what has been dissolved and purified returns to live in the world, in a united and active form. It is not an escape from daily life but a return to it with a different presence.

Why the stages repeat

A frequent mistake is to read the stages as steps to be climbed once and for all. Alchemical texts insist instead on repetition: you dissolve, you purify, you coagulate, and then you begin again, each time on a subtler level. Many illustrations show circles and serpents precisely to recall this cyclical character.

In inner life this means a nigredo can return even after years of work. It is not a failure: it is the sign that the Work goes on with new materials.

An exercise in observation

To become familiar with this language you can keep a short diary for a few weeks with four columns, one for each colour. At the end of the day you note which «colour» you found yourself in and why. The aim is not to label yourself but to learn to recognise the rhythm of your own transformations with the vocabulary of the ancients.

In short

  • The stages of the Work take their names from the colours matter took on in the vessel.
  • Nigredo, albedo, citrinitas and rubedo indicate dissolution, purification, awakening and completion.
  • Many authors use only three stages: there is no single scheme.
  • The stages are not travelled once but return, each time on a subtler level.
