Geomancy: the sixteen figures and the shield of mothers and daughters

Geomancy as a divinatory tradition: Arabic origins, the sixteen figures and how to build the shield of mothers, daughters, witnesses and judge.

Among the divinatory arts of medieval and Renaissance Europe, geomancy held a prominent place. Today it is little known, but for centuries it was studied by philosophers, physicians and astrologers, and it appears in treatises by major authors. Its fascination lies in an elegant, almost mathematical system: starting from simple rows of dots, figures are built that converse with one another according to precise rules.

Origin and spread

The name comes from Greek and means "divination by means of the earth": originally the signs were traced in sand or on the ground. The tradition was born in the Arab world, where it was called ʿilm al-raml, "the science of sand". In the twelfth century, through the translations from Arabic into Latin that brought so many scientific and philosophical texts to Europe, geomancy entered European culture and spread rapidly.

Among the Renaissance authors who wrote about it was Cornelius Agrippa, who in his work on occult philosophy illustrated the geomantic figures and their planetary correspondences. In Africa too the tradition saw important developments, giving rise to related divinatory systems.

The sixteen figures

Each geomantic figure is made of four rows, each with one or two dots. Since each row has two possibilities, there are sixteen combinations. The four rows have been associated with the four elements: from the top, fire, air, water and earth.

Figure Traditional meaning Associated planet
Via Way, path, change Moon
Populus People, crowd, receptivity Moon
Fortuna Maior Greater fortune, inner strength Sun
Fortuna Minor Lesser fortune, passing outside help Sun
Acquisitio Acquisition, gain Jupiter
Laetitia Joy, elevation Jupiter
Amissio Loss, what slips away Venus
Puella Girl, harmony, grace Venus
Albus White, peace, wisdom Mercury
Coniunctio Conjunction, meeting Mercury
Puer Boy, impetus, conflict Mars
Rubeus Red, passion, turmoil Mars
Carcer Prison, limit, stability Saturn
Tristitia Sorrow, depth, recollection Saturn
Caput Draconis Head of the dragon, beginning, entry North lunar node
Cauda Draconis Tail of the dragon, end, exit South lunar node

These correspondences are the most widespread in the European tradition; small variations are sometimes found in the sources.

How the shield is built

The main tool of geomancy is the so-called shield, an arrangement of fifteen figures generated one from another.

The four mothers

Sixteen rows of dots are drawn without counting them, with the mind focused on the question. For each row one checks whether the dots are odd or even: odd gives one dot, even gives two. The sixteen rows, grouped in fours, form the first four figures, called the mothers.

The four daughters

The daughters are obtained by reading the mothers "horizontally": the first daughter is formed from the top rows of the four mothers, the second from the second rows, and so on.

The four nieces

The nieces arise by adding figures in pairs: first and second mother, third and fourth mother, first and second daughter, third and fourth daughter. For each row the dots are added: if the total is odd one dot is marked, if even two.

The witnesses and the judge

Using the same rule, the nieces are added in pairs to obtain the right witness and the left witness. Adding the two witnesses gives the judge, the figure that sums up the answer. A mathematical curiosity of the system is that the judge always has an even number of dots: for this reason only eight of the sixteen figures can appear in that position.

Reading the shield

The reading starts from the judge, which gives the general tone. One then looks at the two witnesses: the right one is often associated with the past or with the person consulting, the left one with the future or with the other party. The mothers and daughters describe the wider context.

An example

Someone asks what to consider before starting a collaboration. The judge turns out to be Coniunctio, the figure of meeting; the witnesses are Albus and Puella. Together they suggest a union founded on calm dialogue and harmony, with an invitation to cultivate clarity and mutual respect. The reading remains symbolic: it describes qualities to foster, not a guaranteed outcome.

Geomancy today

Those approaching this tradition today can simply build the shield with pen and paper, as an exercise in concentration and reflection. In the Officina Ermetica geomancy is also valued for its historical dimension: it is a window onto the way medieval thought sought order and meaning in signs.

In short

  • Geomancy was born in the Arab world as the "science of sand" and reached Europe in the twelfth century.
  • The sixteen figures are made of four rows of one or two dots, associated with the elements.
  • Each figure has a traditional meaning and a planetary correspondence.
  • The shield is built from mothers, daughters, nieces, witnesses and judge according to precise rules.
  • The judge always has an even number of dots and sums up the tone of the answer.
