The green lion devouring the sun: an alchemical enigma

The green lion devouring the sun is one of alchemy's most famous images: what it represents, why it is green and how to read its meaning for inner work.

Among alchemical images few are as striking as the green lion with the sun between its jaws. A royal animal, in a colour it never has in nature, swallowing the brightest body in the sky while a liquid drips from its mouth. The image is famous above all thanks to a woodcut in the Rosarium Philosophorum, but the green lion appears in many texts, with meanings that overlap and sometimes contradict one another.

The lion in alchemy

The lion is a solar animal. In the astrological tradition it is linked to the Sun, and in alchemy it often represents the fixed, active and royal principle. But the treatises distinguish different lions: the red lion usually indicates matter that has reached the perfection of rubedo, while the green lion represents something still raw, powerful and untamed.

Why green

Green, in the language of alchemists, does not indicate only a colour. It also means unripe, immature, alive. The green lion is like a fruit not yet ripe: full of strength, but still far from its finished form. Green also recalls vegetation and the generative power of nature.

What the lion devours

The act of devouring the sun is the heart of the image. The sun represents gold, the perfect metal, or the solar principle within matter. The green lion swallows it, that is, dissolves it. It is therefore the image of an extremely powerful solvent, able to dissolve even what seems incorruptible.

Historians of alchemy have proposed various identifications for this mysterious substance: a corrosive water, a compound based on vitriol, a mineral such as antimony, or the raw mercury of the philosophers. The texts themselves do not agree, and they often play precisely on the ambiguity. Rather than looking for a single chemical answer, it is better to read the image for what it says: there is a raw force capable of dissolving gold, and without this force the Work cannot begin.

The flowing liquid

In the Rosarium woodcut a liquid flows down from the lion's mouth. It is the result of dissolution: the devoured sun does not vanish but turns into a fluid substance that will be collected and worked. Apparent destruction is in fact the first step of a new birth.

This detail is precious for the symbolic reading. What is «devoured» is not lost, but made available for a new form.

An inner reading

On the level of inner work the green lion can be read in several complementary ways.

  • Instinctive force: it is raw vital energy, desire, passion, which can overwhelm solar consciousness but which, once worked, become the very matter of transformation.
  • The crisis that dissolves certainties: just as the lion devours the sun, certain experiences swallow our brightest ideas about ourselves, forcing us to rethink them.
  • Nature before form: green reminds us that every construction is born from a living and still undisciplined matter.

Risk and opportunity

The green lion is a symbol neither to fear nor to glorify. Left to itself it simply devours; guided by the operator's art it produces the liquid from which the Work proceeds. It is the same balance that every tradition asks of those who work with their strongest energies: neither repressing them nor letting themselves be ruled by them.

The green lion and the other lions

Figure Prevailing meaning
Green lion raw solvent, immature and powerful force
Red lion perfected matter, rubedo
Lion fighting a dragon conflict between fixed and volatile principle
Winged lion the fixed becoming volatile

The combinations are numerous. The wingless lion often represents the fixed principle, while the dragon or the eagle indicates the volatile. When the lion grows wings, the texts signal that what was fixed has been made subtle.

An exercise with the image

To work with this symbol you can look for a long time at a reproduction of the woodcut, without reading commentaries, and note three things: what you feel in front of the lion, what you feel in front of the devoured sun, what the flowing liquid suggests. Later you compare your impressions with the traditional interpretations.

Maestro Cornelio often suggests returning to the same image months apart: the green lion changes its face as the person looking at it changes.

In short

  • The green lion is a symbol of raw, immature force, the opposite of the red lion of perfection.
  • By devouring the sun it represents a solvent able to dissolve even gold.
  • The texts do not agree on the corresponding chemical substance, and the ambiguity is intended.
  • Inwardly it points to powerful energies which, when guided, become the matter of transformation.
